For many of us, enlarged pores are a daily cosmetic annoyance and an unpleasant fact of life.

Pores are the tiny passages used by the oil produced in our skin’s sebum glands to reach the surface. There are approximately 300,000 oil glands in human skin and the highest concentrations of them are on the face, chest and back. These glands produce up to one ounce of oil daily!

This regular dose of oil is very necessary, however because it forms a protective layer over the skin that prevents moisture loss and helps to keep our skin soft and resilient. It also prevents injury and environmental damage.

Pores enlarge during puberty, when oil glands in our skin begin to increase the amount of oil they produce. Often, these pores are much more noticeable in those with oily skin, but even women with dry complexions can suffer from large pores within the dreaded T-zone formed by the forehead, nose and chin.

The good news is that there are ways to minimise their appearance and smooth out the complexion.

The challenge is to maintain the right balance between the activity of sebaceous glands and the actual needs of your skin. Essentially, problems start when pores have to deal with more oil than they can handle. Pores expand under the pressure of excessive oil flow, become more visible and, once opened, do not shrink back permanently.

Keeping pores clean is the first thing you need to do if you want to make them less noticeable and prevent them from increasing in size. When oil binds with dirt and dead skin cells, pores become clogged and stretch. To prevent this, keep oil under control, use gentle and effective cleansers and exfoliate regularly.

Apply moisturiser only where essential, many just need to apply it on their cheeks, neck and around the eye area. Of course, this is not quite so feasible in a country where sun protection is required all year round. If you have to make a choice between wearing sun protection and minimising the size of your pores, SPF should undoubtedly take priority.

The jury is still out when it comes to the use of alcohol based toners and astringents. THE SCIENCE OF HAIR

Hair is a wonderful collection of filaments that grow from our skin. It is present on all the major surfaces of our body and it is much more complicated than it appears.

Technically, hair is a biological polymer that consists almost entirely of proteins called keratins. Hair proteins are held together by disulfide bonds, from the amino acid cysteine. This is rather a mouthful of information, however, all we really need to know is that these links are very strong - for example, virtually intact hair has been recovered from ancient Egyptian tombs!

Structurally, hair consists of an inner cortex, comprising of spindle-shaped cells, and an outer sheath, called the cuticle. Human hair typically has 6 to 8 layers of cuticle, wool for example, only has one and other animal hair may have many more layers.

Human hair grows from a follicle and - under normal conditions - it contains around 10% water. The cells at the base of the hair follicle divide and grow extremely rapidly. The cells divide every 23 to 72 hours, faster than any other cells in the body. This is why people undergoing chemotherapy sometimes lose their hair. Chemotherapy targets any rapidly-dividing cell, not just the cancerous ones.

In healthy individuals hair grows approximately 11cm per year and, as mentioned before, is very strong. A single strand can hold 100g (3.5oz) of weight. It is said that a head of hair could support 12 tonnes - wet hair, however, is very fragile.

A developing foetus has all of its hair follicles formed and present by week 22. At this time, there are 5 million follicles on the body. One million of those are on the head, and 100,000 are on the scalp. This is the largest number of follicles we will ever have because follicles are never added to during our lifetime.

The cross-section shape of human hair is typically round in people of Asian descent, round to oval in those of European descent, and nearly flat in African peoples; it is that flatness which allows African hair to attain its frizzy form. In contrast, hair that has a round cross-section will be straight.

There are pigment cells in hair that give it its characteristic colour. Brown and black hair is characterised by high levels of the dark pigment eumelanin and lower levels contain the pale pigment phaeomelanin.

Fair hair is characteristic of the peoples of Northern Europe, particularly Scandinavia and is genetically associated with the paler eye-colours of blue and green. However, red and brown hair are also very common in these regions; and, conversely, there is a small minority of blond people even among dark-skinned populations in places such as the Middle East. By percentage, fair hair varies from less than 5% in North Africa and the Gulf countries, to about 10% in Southern Europe, to 35% in Northern Europe, to over 50% in the Nordic countries.

Hair is a fabulously complex and unique substance that performs many functions; it insulates, reduces friction , beautifies us and it helps define our gender identity. So while sun damage may not show when you're young, it will later in life.

Nothing can completely undo sun damage, although the skin can sometimes repair itself. So, it's never too late to begin protecting yourself from the sun.

If you really care for your skin you should also quit smoking if you're a smoker - people who smoke tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun exposure. The reason for this difference is unclear. It may be because smoking interferes with normal blood flow in the skin.

Sun damage also causes skin cancer. The chance of developing skin cancer increases as people age, especially for those who live in sunny areas of the country. There are three types of common skin cancers:

Basal cell carcinomas are the most common. They almost never spread to other vital organs, but should be removed since they will get bigger and can affect areas that are nearby.

Squamous cell carcinomas are less common but are potentially more harmful because they can grow quickly and spread to other organs.

Malignant melanomas are the most dangerous of all the skin cancers because they may spread to other organs and when they do, they are often fatal.

Finding any cancer early and treating it quickly is important, especially in the case of melanoma. The best defense against skin cancer is paying attention to the warning signs. If there is a sudden change in the look of a mole or a new spot, see a doctor. Look for differences in color, size, shape, or surface quality (scaliness, oozing, crusting, or bleeding). Have a doctor check any dark colored spots.

Dry skin is common in later life. About 85 percent of older people develop "winter itch," because overheated indoor air is dry. The loss of sweat and oil glands as we age may also worsen dry skin. Anything that further dries the skin (such as overuse of soaps, antiperspirants, perfumes, or hot baths) will make the problem worse.

Dry skin itches because it is irritated easily. If your skin is very dry and itchy, see a doctor because this condition can affect your sleep, cause irritability, or be a symptom of a disease. For example, diabetes and kidney disease can cause itching. Some medicines make the itchiness worse.

Ultimately, the best way to keep skin healthy is to avoid sun exposure beginning early in life. Here are some other tips:

Do not sunbathe or visit tanning parlors and try to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

If you are in the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. always wear protective clothing--such as a hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses.

Put on sunscreen lotion before going out in the sun to help protect your skin from UV light. Remember to reapply the lotion as needed. Always use products that are SPF (sun protection factor) 15 or higher.

Check your skin often for signs of skin cancer. If there are changes that worry you, call the doctor right away. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that older, fair-skinned people have a yearly skin check by a doctor as part of a regular physical check-up.

Relieve dry skin problems by using a humidifier at home, bathing with soap less often, and using a moisturizing lotion. If this doesn't work, see your doctor.

CLEANING YOUR ELECTRIC SHAVER

It's best to clean your Norelco Philips shaver after every third, but preferably after every shave. On Braun, Panasonic or Remington foil shavers you can lift off the head frame, which holds the screen (foil), and gently brush out the whiskers from the under side with the cleaning brush the manufacturer’s supply. Do not touch the screen itself with the cleaning brush. It is very fragile.

Below the screen is the cutter and that’s the part you need to brush out. Get all the accumulated whiskers out of the cutter, so that it can properly do what it's supposed to do: Cut your beard! Whisker residue built up on the cutters (blades) can prevent you from getting a good shave.

For Philips shavers with rotary head shavers, lift off the razor head assembly and brush out the under side of the three cutters and the razor chamber. Do not tap heads on the sink to remove whiskers. This may dent or damage the precision-made combs. Every other month (or more if necessary) remove each of the cutters and combs from the retaining plate, keeping each set as a matched pair. Brush whiskers from the cutters and soak in liquid cleaner and lubricate.

Caring for your shaver

After you clean your Philips Norelco shaver, it is important to lubricate the metal surfaces of your screen and cutter. Spray a product such as Philip’s aerosol lubricant, part no. AL80C or Remington's "Shaver Saver" on the shaving screen while the saver is running. This immediately frees up any metal against metal binding. Use this lubricant sparingly. No need to wipe it off. Proceed with your shaving. You’ll notice a pick up in the sound level of your shaver’s motor which tells you that it is then operating at its maximum power level.

Replacing the Screen and Cutter

To get a good close shave, you must first start with a smooth screen and a sharp cutter. Over a period of time, usually one year, the screen will become thin and wear through. The cutter will become dull. For best results, we recommend that you replace these parts annually during the life of the shaver. If you don't, you're inclined to press harder to get a closer shave, or you may go over the same area of your face repeatedly. Either of these actions usually will result in irritated skin.

HOW TO SHAVE WITH AN ELECTRIC SHAVER

D.I.Y. FACE MASKS

Not every man is confident enough to nonchalantly pop a facemask packet into their shopping basket - and anyway - if it is a facemask your skin needs, you don't even have to buy one.

You can use basic ingredients found around your home to create simple yet effective facemasks. Here is a collection of recipes suitable for many different skin types.

Facemask for oily skin

1/2 tsp lemon juice
1 egg whites
1 tsp honey
1/2 cup strawberries
2 drops eucalyptus oil or jojoba oil (optional)

Blend the above ingredients, apply and leave on the skin for 10 minutes. The juices in strawberries and lemons contain natural astringents.

Facemask for normal skin

1 carrot
1tsp olive oil

Place both ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Apply to the skin, wait 15 minutes before rinsing off with cool water.

Facemask for dry skin

2 tsp glycerin
1 x capsule vitamin E

Prick the E capsule and squeeze the contents into the glycerin, mix well, apply to your clean face. Leave on for 15 minutes, rinse off with cold water.

Facemask for combination skin

6 rose petals
2 tbsps rosewater
1 tbsp natural yogurt
1 tbsp honey

Soak the rose petals in a little water. Crush the petals in a bowl then add the rosewater, yogurt and honey. Mix well and apply to the skin. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse.

Facemask for sensitive, sunburned, chapped or irritated skin

1 cup natural yogurt
½ cup oatmeal

Mix the ingredients together and apply to the skin for 15 minutes. Wash off mask with a warm washcloth. This soothing mask works well on other skin types as well. For oily skin, add a couple drops of lime juice. For dry skin, mix in a couple tablespoons of honey.

Facemask for exfoliation

3 tbsp sugar
4 tbsp warm water

Melt sugar in warm water. Make sure granules are dissolved, otherwise they may tear your skin. Apply to the face and leave for 5 minutes. Gently massage around the skin to exfoliate. Rinse. Follow this with an application of your normal moisturizer.

Facemask for all skin types

1 tbsp honey
1 egg yolk
1 tbsp yogurt
1/2 tsp almond oil

Mix all ingredients and apply to the skin. Allow to dry for about 15 - 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Honey stimulates and smoothes, egg and almond oil penetrate and moisturize. Yogurt refines the pores.

The aspirin facemask

6 uncoated aspirin tablets
3 or 4 drops of warm water

Mix water and crushed aspirins together. If mixture is too dry, add water one drop at a time. Apply the thick paste to your skin. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes during which time the paste will dry and begin to crumble. As you wash off the facemask with warm water, use a circular motion to gently exfoliate the skin. Pat dry.

The BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) content in the humble aspirin is a powerful agent against blemishes. This combination mask and scrub has received many positive reviews on the message boards of www.acne.org and is great for pimple prone skin. Those with an allergy to aspirin or BHAs should not use this once weekly mask.

COPING WITH OILY SKIN

Just when you think you have your skin all under control - it changes on you. For example, the oiliness of your skin can change from day to day, depending on the sun, the wind, the time of year, your hormones and the weather. However, whether your skin is oily all year round or just in the summertime, it is not welcome. Oily skin appears excessively thick and dull, usually with coarse pores and a sprinkling of pimples. This is because the oil glands of the skin are overactive and oil builds up in the skin, making it prone to the formation of blackheads.

Many people do not have oily skin but a combination skin, meaning that it is oily in some areas but dry or just normal in others. While oily skin has its disadvantages, it has the main advantage that it ages at a slower rate than other skin types.

Genetic causes are at play in the case of oily skin as well as diet, hormones, cosmetics, pregnancy (in the case of women), contraceptives, and environmental conditions like a hot and humid climate. Since high levels of hormones, especially testosterone, make the oil glands over active, oily skin is more frequently seen in teenagers. Regular cleansing with hot water and soap is needed to prevent oil build up and clogging of pores.

However, take care not to use harsh soaps and other products that over-dry your skin. If you use dehydrating products on the skin, the upper layer goes dry and shrinks, resulting in obstruction in the flow of oil through the pores. The result is the clogging of the pores.

Wash the skin with hot water (but not burning hot) rather than tepid water. Hot water dissolves the oil more readily. Do not use cleansing creams – opt for an antibacterial cleansing lotion or a mild, medicated soap. After cleansing, treat the skin with a natural oil-free moisturizer.

If your skin is too oily and you are under 30, you should do four cleansings daily and should use little or no moisturizer. Use your fingertips to massage your face well during the cleansing.

A clay or mud mask can help bring the oily condition of the skin to normal. For sensitive skin, white or rose-coloured clays are better as a mask.
If you have oily skin, a diet rich in protein but lacking sugar, fluids, and salt is recommended. Vegetables and fruits are necessary; especially important being foods that are rich in vitamin B2. These include whole grains, beans, nuts and royal jelly. Use minimum oil in your diet and abstain from alcohol, soft drinks, sugary drinks, chocolate and other junk food. Talk to you doctor or dermatologist for more help with oily skin problems.

THINKING OF GROWING A BEARD?

COPING WITH DRY SKIN

Our skin needs moisture to stay smooth and supple, but retaining moisture is not always easy - especially so for men who need to shave their skin every day.

Dry skin, also called xerosis, is a common problem although it is not usually a serious issue. Factors which contribute to dry and cracked skin include:

• Inherited factors.
• Metabolic factors such as an underactive thyroid gland, or excessive weight loss.
• Increasing age, resulting in decreased natural lubrication.
• Cool weather, especially when windy.
• Air conditioning.
• Excessive bathing, showering or swimming, especially in strongly chlorinated hot or cold water.
• Contact with soap, detergents and solvents.
• Frictional irritation and chapping.

Chronic or severe dry skin problems do exist and may require a dermatologist's advice; however, for mild cases of xerosis there are steps that can be taken to improve the skin’s condition.

Locate

The fact that we may have oily facial skin does not mean that the rest of us is as lucky. Dry skin is most common on the lower legs, arms, flanks (sides of the abdomen) and thighs. Locate these dry areas and embark on a plan to remedy their condition.

Showering and bathing

Hot water dries out the skin, so try to use lukewarm water when showering and bathing. It is also a good idea to limit the time you spend in the shower to an absolute minimum. Bathing provides the skin with moisture temporarily, but it removes the skin's oily lipid layer and in the end causes more moisture loss than gain.

Avoid rubbing the skin too harshly with sponges or washcloths and when towelling, do not rub the skin. Instead, blot or pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the surface. Next, apply a moisturizer.

Steer clear of harsh soaps that dry the skin. Recommended soaps are Dove, Olay and Basis. Even better than soap are skin cleansers such as Cetaphil Lotion or Oilatum. When moisturising, water-based lotions are best cosmetically, however oil-based creams are more effective in trapping moisture. If you have very dry skin, apply oil to the still moist skin, then apply a moisturizing cream at bedtime.

Protect

All areas that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, hands and back of the neck should have a moisturiser containing sun block or a sunscreen of SPF 30 applied daily.

Laundry

For laundry, try using non-biological washing powder or liquid and avoid using fabric softeners, especially in the dryer. Keep irritating fabrics away from your skin. Do not wear clothing made of wool or other ‘scratchy’ fabrics and use good quality cotton percale sheets on your bed.

If you feel itchy without a visible rash or if dryness and itching are preventing you from sleeping you should consult your physician. I stumbled across this gizmo and figured I'd give the Norelco name the benefit of the doubt and take a chance on it. I have been quite pleasantly surprised. Not only do all of the attachments work well, it's more powerful than I expected. My previous trimmer had a wide, blunt tip, and it was hard to see what I was doing in a mirror because the shaver blocked my view. This trimmer's tip is tapered so it's easy to see the point of contact. And the nose hair trimmer is more powerful than my old AA-battery-powered model, so I trashed that one as well, which has simplified my morning routine!"

"I bought the whole kit just for the nose hair trimmer. I hoped it was better than the Panasonic ER411NC which was torture to use. The Norelco has worked great so far. Followed the directions to charge the unit for 10 hours and I have had no problems and no discomfort. Its not pretty but it does the job very well."

ADVICE WHEN BUYING SPARE PARTS

According to the instructions supplied with the various Philips shavers, the shaving heads need cleaning every two months and they need to be replaced every 18 months. However, not all Philips spare parts will fit well on all Philips shavers.

Heads are given an 'HQ' number, such as HQ2, HQ3, HQ4 and so on. This number should correspond with the first digit of the model number of the shaver.

Although the heads look much the same, attempts to fit the wrong HQ number may fail; for example, an HQ5 head will not correctly engage with the spindle on a shaver model designed for an HQ4 head for instance, due to a small extra piece of plastic in the centre of the HQ5 drive socket.

Care should therefore be taken when choosing replacement parts.
